Is it Really Worth it? War Child Charity Bundle

    PPaPaZooT

I created the GBG formula to help you find the best bundle deals without having to dig through every game yourself. But everyone values different things, so I also let you customize the scoring parameters to fit your own preferences.

At the same time, I want the default formula to make sense for most players. That’s why I’m constantly looking at the results, questioning my assumptions, and tweaking the formula to make the scores as useful as possible.

I decided to test the formula by buying the top rated bundle each week, playing all the games and rating it based on my subjective opinion instead of hard data.

I'm starting with the best rated bundle from last week: War Child Charity Bundle from Fanatical. You get 11 games for only $7.99. The GBG formula prefers cheap bundles, so this one scored a high 7.2.

Let's go game by game to see if this bundle justifies its score!

    A Space for the Unbound

A Space for the Unbound A story driven game with simple and easy gameplay and beautiful pixel art graphics and music. It has over 7000 Steam reviews - 94% positive.

I've played only the prologue and the first chapter, but the game is already hinting at a world ending event and I like the characters, high school couple Atma and Reyna, so I'll keep playing to see how the rest of the story unfolds.

The lowest discounted price for this Indonesian adventure game was $7.99, so if you like it, you've already paid for the entire bundle!

    Webbed

Webbed Webbed is a bundle favorite - it has been bundled by both Humble and Fanatical more than once. Steam reviews are overwhelmingly positive at 95% with over 14k reviews.

In this game you play as a spider on an adventure to save her boyfriend, who was kidnapped by a bird. You need to ask other animals for help, including communist ants, and you help them by solving physics puzzles in an interconnected world. You solve the puzzles with your web, as you'd expect, but you can also shoot lasers!

I can see the charm in this game, but I don't really like puzzle platformers so I gave up after half an hour.

    Airport CEO

Airport CEO A tycoon style game where, as you'd expect, you build and manage an airport. Overall it has very positive Steam reviews, but the recent ones are mixed - players are complaining about pathfinding bugs that will ruin your airport once it gets bigger.

I haven't seen those bugs because I haven't gone past the tutorial! It's not a simple game and the tutorial is not very helpful. It tells you what to build, but not where to position it, so you'll need some deeper understanding of how airports work, or some patience. I have neither, so I gave up on this game very quickly.

    Boyfriend Dungeon

Boyfriend Dungeon A mix of dungeon crawling and dating sim, where your weapons turn into characters you can romance, level up and take on dates.

The dungeon crawling is far too simple for me. The combat is basic and there isn't much progression beyond level-ups and traits you unlock by improving your relationships. And I'm just not interested in dating sims, so the other half of the game does nothing for me either.

Still, I can see why it found an audience - the premise is unusual and it is a lot more relaxed than most dungeon crawlers. It has 88% positive reviews on Steam, so the combination clearly works for a lot of players.

Production Line : Car factory simulation

Production Line : Car factory simulation A car factory management sim where you design efficient production lines, research new technologies, do market research and scale your factory while trying to stay profitable.

Compared to Airport CEO, the tutorial is better, and you start the game with many options locked behind the research tree, which makes it much easier to get started.

I'm still getting into it, but I like the core loop so far. I'll keep playing for a while longer - at least until I manage to build one profitable factory.

    Seafrog

Seafrog A 2.5D platformer with skateboarding elements. The levels are filled with ramps and grindable rails, and you perform tricks to build up your boost, which lets you gain speed and progress through the level.

I grew up playing Tony Hawk games, so it was fun to mess around with the skating for a bit, but I am not a big fan of platformers, so the skating alone is not enough to keep me playing.

    Thea: The Awakening

Thea: The Awakening A turn-based strategic survival game set in a dark fantasy world heavily inspired by Slavic mythology, where you guide a small group of survivors through a world devastated by an apocalyptic force. There is exploration, village management, crafting and card-based combat, all with a roguelike structure and plenty of events and choices.

I actually bought Thea before and played around 2 hours of it. I love turn-based strategy and the Slavic mythology setting is not something you see often, so it attracted me. But survival mechanics aren't really my thing, and they take up a big part of the game, so I don't think I'll be coming back to it.

    Wirm

Wirm Wirm is a physics-based platformer where you control a wiggly worm through a series of obstacle-filled environments, using its unusual movement to climb, crawl and navigate the world. It has a similar feel to Getting Over It, although the difficulty is toned down a bit - it's easier, but still definitely not easy.

Games built around this kind of movement and endless retries are just not my idea of fun. I gave it a fair try, but I quickly saw that this isn't for me.

    This War of Mine

This War of Mine This game puts you in the shoes of civilians trying to survive in a besieged city (inspired by the siege of Sarajevo). You manage a shelter, scavenge for supplies, craft, trade and make difficult choices while trying to keep everyone alive. The civilian perspective and the moral consequences of surviving are what make it stand out from more traditional war games.

I bought it years ago and played around 1.5 hours. I am not a big fan of survival games, but I'm still keeping it on my maybe list, hoping I'll give it another try. It's such a highly regarded game, and its take on war, survival and difficult moral choices is genuinely compelling.

You can usually pick up This War of Mine individually for very cheap - its year low price is just $1.39 - so it's not worth buying the bundle just for it. That said, it's easily one of the best games in the bundle. Also note that the developer announced they are working on a full remake.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League A third-person shooter set in the Batman: Arkham universe. You play as Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang and King Shark as they take on Brainiac and the corrupted Justice League, with gunplay, character-specific traversal and looter-shooter progression.

The humor didn't really work for me, and I don't care much about DC characters either. I might get back to it at some point if I'm in the mood for a dumb shooter, but it's not something I'm eager to continue right now.

    shapez

shapez A minimalist factory-building and automation game in the same vein as Factorio, but with a much simpler focus. Instead of producing increasingly complex products, you build and optimize automated production lines to extract, process and deliver different shapes, expanding your factory as the requirements get more demanding.

I can appreciate the appeal of optimizing everything and watching an automated factory run smoothly, but to me the whole thing feels a lot like work. It's well designed for what it's trying to do, but factory optimization is just not something I find relaxing or entertaining.

    Verdict

This bundle offers a variety of genres, which means there is something for everyone, but it also means that not too many people will like most of these games.

For me, just 3 of them seem interesting enough to play more than a short try out session - A Space for the Unbound, Production Line and This War of Mine. Buying these games separately would cost around $14, so I can't say it's a bad deal getting them bundled at $7.99. But it's not a great deal either so I wouldn't score this bundle as high as the GBG formula did (scored 7.2).

Which bundle will be featured next week? Try to guess from the list of the best bundles.

    My Score: 6.5 / 10
